Obviously anyone’s views are shaped by context and experience, so you might like to know a little about me:
- I’m a father of young twins, who are a delight (most of the time).
- I live in Sheffield. Before that I spent about a decade in London, and grew up in a small market town in Suffolk.
- I will soon be entering middle age, although some argue I was born into it.
- I’m a change management professional, mainly working in adult social care.
- What spare time I have is mainly spent dancing, playing and around the traditional English folk arts.
- I also have an active interest in cooking, current affairs, being active (walking, running, climbing), sport, comedy, theatre and crazy golf.
- I have little interest in most popular culture, fashion and non-crazy golf
I suspect the a chunk of my posts will be about the folk arts, it’s probably worth knowing a little about my folk involvement:
- I am a musician in the ceilidh band The Gloworms.
- I am morris dancer – a founder member of Five Rivers Morris, having previously danced with Hammersmith Morris and Morris Offspring.
- I am the dance director at Shrewsbury Folk Festival, and have been since late 2015. I work closely with the dance teams director who books the morris programme, but am not responsible for those elements. This distinction is relevant to some blog posts.
- I was on the Board of the English Folk Dance & Song Society for a maximum term from 2011 to 2017.
- In the past I have been involved in running: Shooting Roots (1996 – 2005) and Knees Up Cecil Sharp Ceilidhs (2003-2007).
- I actively dance, listen, drink and natter at folk events around the country.
